Aston Villa U23s 1-0 Brentford U23s
As dominant a victory as a 1-0 can be from our U23s as we hit top of the group for the first time and maintain our excellent start to the season. We had home advantage and the counter against a lower rated side but couldn't make our chances pay off. Whilst the seniors came out 1-0 in a tight affair, their young colleagues notched up 21 chances to the opposition's 5 with 13 vs 3 of those on target. We had 67% of the ball and our players dominated every area on skill gains with the exception of Anderson in their goal who was in sparkling form and made 12 saves - keeping the score down.

Indeed, Anderson kept us at bay until the 78th minute when the deadlock was finally broken from a slightly unlikely source with Mads Bidstrup finishing off the chance made for him by Dowell. The Dane was making his full debut for the club and had a very bright game - looking like a promising addition to the young midfield.

So 10 points from the first 12 available and we sit in top spot in the group - although we have played three of the four at home so far with the only dropped points coming on the road. We also haven't played against Newcastle as yet who are our nearest rivals in second spot. But we have the points on the board, a cushion of five points to third place and a healthy goal difference. It is too early to say as yet what we need to definitely progress but we're in good shape and hopefully can do it sooner rather than later. The major challenge for us in the U23s is keeping as many players eligible for the team as we can and qualifying early would give us the chance to rotate. As it is we are almost certain to see Valietti, Dowell, and Costello rate up before long whilst Dembele and Broja are also risks. We want players to progress but also need to maintain a balanced squad so it's a really tricky one. The ability to rotate certainly would help that.

So, the goal is to get qualification done, ASAP. Keeping the wins coming will certainly help that.
