Re: Round 14 Results and Reaction
Tottenham Hotspur 0-7 Aston Villa
I was very surprised when Spurs failed to sheet and it left us playing against the counter. Last time we played 4-1-2-2-1E away from home we were beaten as well so things didn't look great for us in this one.
Fortunately for once we were able to pull off a massive result - probably a bit of a freak in many ways but we'll take it. Svante Ingelsson got the ball rolling after the half hour in a controversial goal given by the officials - we assume goal line technology was used. This turned into a quick 1-2 as Anthony Gordon - playing very well as an AM - finished off after a well timed run. And Ansu Fati got in on the act on the stroke of half time to make the points safe.
But we weren't finished there. Fati added his second 10 minutes in the the second half before Ingelsson made his a brace with a brilliantly taken free kick a minute later. And on the hour mark, Gordon capitalised on a mistake from the Spurs defence to make it 2 for him in front of what was a rapidly emptying Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Sadly for those three none could complete a hat trick and so it was left to Clint leemans to finish off the scoring with a good finish in the last ten minutes.
The win was our biggest in my time as Villa manager and the first time we have hit 7 so a very satisfying day - particularly away from home. The crazy part is we weren't as dominant as we have been in other games but scored at will.
Everton and Liverpool drawing added to our day as we pull 3 points clear of the Reds and 5 away from the Blues. The 7 goal addition to our GD hals as well although we're still a long way behind Liverpool and Utd on that aspect. With three games to go until the halfway point we have to face the Merseyside duo both at home so we are entering a massive part of our season.
The only downside of the game was I messed up the substitutions so we are going to be struggling for fitness heading into the Anglo American Cup this week. That was an oversight on my part and I will have to be more careful moving forwards as that is now an unnecessary challenge to overcome. We won't let that take the gloss off an excellent day at the office though.
