Up against London rivals Queens Park Rangers and they was let down by their manager when he didn't turn up. It left us with tactical advantage and we made the most of it. Breel Embolo was name captain before the season and he started the re-pay the trust given when he scored his first goal of the season in the fourth minute. His partner up front, Jean-Philippe Mateta, played a good pass to Embolo and his shot was too much to handle for the visiting goalkeeper. Scoring that early in the game should have given us confidence to go on to take the win easily but we played with high shoulders and the away side had every chance to snatch a result. Thankfully some heroic defending helped us to get off to a winning start in the group stages of the league cup.

We had home and tactical advantage and dominated the game but they found the net with two of their three shots on target and we couldn't get more than a late consolation through Diogo Jota. One of those really frustrating games where we don't feel we could have done any more but gone away with no points.

Fortunately it is the first of six group games so plenty of time to turn this around. And we aren't concerned over the performance just the result so it's not all doom and gloom. As I have said already this squad is being built and it won't be an overnight turnaround. Hopefully the fans can see what we are doing and will have patience with us. It was a tough one to swallow for all of us but we will bounce back and keep scrapping to get through in this one.
