Yokohama Mariners 1-2 Aston Villa

A great three points on the road although very hard fought. We had the counter but when Marin Pongracic got sent off after 25 minutes and they scored from the resultant free kick I feared the worst. But Matheus Cunha continued his inspired start to his Villa career with a double to take it to 9 goals in 9 appearances. Has there ever been a better start to life at a club? We were able to hold on even after Tim iroegbunam was our second red of the day with 10 minutes left.

Away points in continental competition are hard to come by and this was one we had to scrap for so to take the spoils is very pleasing. The result puts us 5th in the table as we approach the halfway stage but we have a game in hand on those above us and matches against the English teams who lead the way still to come as well as 3 of our remaining five at home. Qualification is very much in our hands but a long way to go

Al Ahly 3-0 Manchester United

Disappointed to have the United manager not turn up again but, when Khaled Abdelfattah was sent off in the first minute that massively evened it up. We were unlikely to lose but getting the goals to win it was going to be the challenge. We were in complete control but left it late with Hussain El Shahat not opening the scoring until the 70th minute. We grabbed two in injury time with Ahmed Reda getting one before Shahat's second which gave the scoreline the shape it deserved and hopefully boosted our GD but this game was not as easy as it looks!

The win takes us up to mid table with a game in hand on some of the teams above us and we are up and scoring in the competition which is good news. Hopefully this will spur us on to good things for the rest of the campaign
