Re: Group Game 2 Results and Reactions
Rayados 1 - 5 Reds
A superb win after a wonderful second half display. We’ve got off to a great start in the group stages with two straight wins and we’ve put ourselves in a good position.
The start to the game was relative quiet and we didn’t see much action the first half an hour of the game. The two teams matched each other and struggled to get their play going. In the 29th minute we opened the score when Sandro Tonali lobbed the ball over Erick Aguirre and nutmegged Esteban Andrada in Rayados goal. The game got much worse for Rayados when Erick Aguirre was unlucky to score an own goal five minutes before the break.
Joao Felix and Ruben Dias came close the make it 3-0 at the early stages of the second half but both had attempts against the woodwork. In the 50th minute Ivor Pandur fouled Alfonso Alvarado inside the box and the home side had the chance to get back in the game from the spot kick. German Berterame sent Pandur the wrong way and made it a one goal game. But we got ourselves two goals up seven minutes later when Alejandro Garnacho made it 3-1. Ruben Dias made sure of the win with twenty minutes left of the game when his shot smashed into the top corner and scored our fourth of the evening. Topaz Kronmüller returned from an unsuccessful loan spell at Southampton earlier this week and had a brilliant game when he got the chance from the start. He rounded off a perfect evening when he scored the last goal of the game and finalized the score.

Sarsfeld 2-2 Aston Villa
A disastrous start to this game saw us concede a goal in the first minute and another after 18. We just simply didn't seem to have woken up after the long flight but it gave us a mountain to climb against a top side and manager!
We had no choice but to go for it - well, we could have sat back and minimised GD but that's not what we're about - so we moved Svante Ingelsson from DM to AM meaning we were 3-1-1-3-2 rather than 3-2-1-2-2 like we started. This was a massive gamble that could have left us exposed at the back. As it was it put them on the back foot and Clint Leemans was able to pull one back for us before the half hour before Ingelsson himself equalised just after half time. Once level we switched back to the more defensive setup and were able to see the game out. On the balance of play the draw was ultimately a fair result.
It was an unusual one for us and forced because of the suspensions we had suffered in the previous game. Players need to understand the knock on effect of their actions and how it impacts our potentials of success. In the end we got through this one but could have been different.
We now have another issue with Tristan Jumeau stretchered off on his debut. The knock doesn't look as bad as first feared but he will still miss a couple.
After two games we're still in the top four as the English sides continue to dominate this competition. Looks like it'll be a tough battle to maintain a position up there but we've started ok and are up for the fight

Botafogo 0-0 AlAhly
Very little to say about this game as our debut in the competition was played out in a dull goalless encounter. We certainly didn't deserve to lose but maybe didn't do enough to win either. Two sides who were cagey and tried top play counter attack always nullifies each other.
Not a terrible result as we sit with a game in hand on the teams above us and have one of our away games out of the way. Home matches are key in this one and, if we can make the Cairo International a fortress, hopefully that will serve us in getting through. An away point is never a disaster
