Re: Round 8 Results and Reaction
Arsenal U23s 0-10 (ten) Aston Villa U23s
We came into this game off the back of 4 games without a win and to face a side that had beaten us 2-0 at home earlier in the season. We had two objectives - stop the winless streak and get revenge for that one. We delivered on both of those in emphatic style.
We knew their manager wouldn't show up so countered with a passing style. The big moment in the first half if not the game came just after the half hour mark when their best defender Aertssen was sent off leaving them with a 3-4-2 with 3 weak defenders. Tom Costello got the ball rolling for us just two minutes later and we never looked back. The game was made more comfortable for us just before the break with Costello adding his second and Rory Wilson wrapped up the points just after half time.
Then it all went a bit crazy! Wilson added his second on 54 minutes and then Karamoko Dembele got in on the act just two minutes later to make it 5-0 before making it a brace for himself just one minute later. The race was on to be first to get a hat trick and it was Costello who won completing his after 62 minutes. Just a minute later he grabbed his 4th and our 8th before Dembele finished his hat trick to make it 9-0 after just 66 minutes. In total that was 8 goals scored in 22 crazy minutes either side of half time! With the crowd shouting "we want 10" Ryan Trevitt duly obliged on 88 minutes. Unfortunately the game ended on a slightly sour note with Harry Souttar getting sent off for a second booking.
But big wins like this don't' come around very often and we fully enjoyed it. Too many times we have lost to weaker squads when we've had the counter so coming out on top so comprehensively is a nice return for those ones. We managed 41 shots with 24 on target and had 83% possession - the highest I have seen. The result keeps us 3rd and 6 behind the top two sides but at least we have significantly boosted our goal difference with this one and, if we can beat them when next we face it'll be very much game on.
The downside of this result is the massive abs gains meaning some players will be moving on faster than we thought. Mads Bidstrup gained 200 passing abs and so is pushing the top limit - when we signed him he had 262 and we thought we'd have him for the season. But we have Harry McKirdy coming in this week and we keep wheeling and dealing to keep the squad legal and competitive.
In a game when very often you are left frustrated this was a very pleasing one. We look forward to the next.
