West Ham United U23 edged a tight contest at the Alan Higgs Centre, defeating Coventry City U23 1–0 thanks to a moment of quality from M. Golding midway through the first half.
Coventry created the clearer openings before the break, with Betjemann and Obikwu both denied by an inspired F. Herrick, who proved decisive throughout. West Ham’s breakthrough came on 32 minutes when Golding drove forward and unleashed a superb strike to take the lead.
Coventry pushed hard for an equaliser, striking the bar late on through Betjemann in a highly controversial moment that was not given as a goal. Herrick stood firm under pressure, finishing with seven saves to preserve the lead.
In the end, West Ham’s with Golding’s goal and overall influence earning him Man of the Match honours.
