Aston Villa U23s 9 (nine) - 1 Southampton U23s
One of those games we have every now and then where everything goes right for us. We knew the opposition manager wouldn't be around so took an easy counter along with home advantage. We created 38 chances to just 2 from them with 19 shots on target to their 1 - although theirs did go in for just the second goal we have conceded all season which was the minor disappointment on the day.
Karamoko Dembele got the ball rolling with a goal in the very first minute and Tom Costello ensured control a few minutes later. It was 4-0 before the 20 minute mark as Keilan Quin and Rory Wilson both bagged their first of the game - both these players were exceptional in today's game. It was here that Saints pulled one back but Dembele's second made it 5-1 before half time.
At the end of the first half Ridvan Yilmaz was shown a straight red so we took of Costello for a defender and were happy to sit on the lead. Somehow with 10 men we managed four more goals with Wilson and Quinn getting their seconds either side of one from Rico Lewis. Wilson completed his hat trick in the final minute to put the gloss on a fantastic result.
Our dominant start to the season continues with our sixth win from six and it is the manner of the victories that stands out - 21 goals for so far with only 2 against. In this competition we are top of the table and six points clear of third place with nine points to play for. Qualification is almost sewn up and if possible we'd like to do that next game enabling us to rest some players. The problem with big wins like this is players move closer to rating up a lot faster and that will really hamper us later one. But we're not going to let that take any gloss off a fantastic win - these don't come around often!
